Night of baroque opera

Maria Pepper

A Night of Baroque Opera will be held in Rowe Street Church, Wexford on Thursday, March 21 at 8pm to celebrate the European Day of Early Music.

The vocal and instrumental concert will include arias, duets and choruses from Baroque operas by Czech and Irish musicians and classically trained solo singers including students and professionals.

A group of soloists and instrumentalists will travel from the Czech Republic to take part in the performance.

European Day of Early Music is an international music festival which takes place in various countries all over Europe and is staged and broadcoast simultaneously through YouTube, television and radio.

This is the first time that singers representing Wexford or Ireland will be involved in the festival.

The musical director and conductor for the Wexford event is James Gray who has spent the past 30 years studying and interpreting in Florence, the birthplace of Early Music and Opera.

The performers will include Hayley Crosbie, mezzo-soprano; Rut Ni Ghallagher, soprano; Klara Kasparova, soprano; Natalie Smausova, soprano; Petra Prymkova, soprano; Marketa Malcova, artistic director, mezzo soprano; David Cuner, tenor; Myles Doyle, tenor, and Pavel Ksica, bass.

The idea of staging a Wexford concert came from Marketa Malcova, a classically trained singer from the Czech Republic who now lives in Wexford where she runs the Wexford Singing School. She moved here in 2002.

Marketa has organised summer courses in Early Music in the Czech Republic for the past six years. 'The original objective of the course was to give my students an opportunity to put into practice what they have learned and achieved from their singing lessons to date', she said.

A graduate of the Prague Conservatoire of Music, she has performed with the world-renowned Prague Chamber choir during Wexford Festival Opera.

Tickets at €15 each and €10 for students, are on sale at the Irish National Heritage Park in Ferrycarrig and in Wexford Silver, 115 North Main Street and will also be available on the door on the night.
