Gorey & District Noticeboard

Food bank in Gorey - Gorey Christian Assembly is hosting a weekly food bank on Wednesdays from 10am to 12pm for those in need of a food parcel, a hot beverage or just a bit of company.

All are welcome to attend at the Gorey Christian Assembly building that is located on the Heath, Ramsgate Village, Gorey and there is no charge or strings attached.

Gorey Active Retirement

Join the group on July 9 for a tour of Glasnevin Museum and Cemetery as well as a visit to Cadbury's chocolate factory.

Cost is €35 per person and the bus leaves the Ashdown Park Hotel at 9 a.m. sharp.

On August 14 there will be a mystery trip. The cost is €50 per person and it is advisable to book early as it tends to be very popular.

From September 16 to 20, Gorey Active Retirement's autumn break will be to the Quality Hotel, Youghal for four nights.

Dinner, bed and breakfast and entertainment each night is included as well as trips out each day. The cost is €300 per person sharing either a double, twin or apartment.

Single Room supplement is €80 and there is a non-refundable deposit of €50 to book a place.

On October 16, the South East Region ten pin bowling fun day takes place at Leisure Max Wexford, starting at 10.30 a.m.

Note that all bookings, payments and inquiries should be made on Fridays in the Loch Garman Arms between 11. a.m. and 1 p.m. during regular meetings. Non-members are very welcome to come along on Fridays and check out the activities by dropping into the Loch Garman Arms. There is some activity on most days of the week.

Friends of MS

Friends of Local People with Multiple Sclerosis will hold a tea and coffee day in Roche's Allcare Pharmacy, Main Street, Gorey on Friday, July 5 from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. and ask that people come along and support it.

All funds raised from the day will be in aid of Local People with Multiple Sclerosis North Wexford and South Wicklow.

Stop food waste

Join Gorey Tidy Towns in Gorey Library for the Stop Food Waste Challenge throughout July and learn to reduce food waste through several easy steps like knowing foods you waste and why, meal planning and shopping, how to use leftovers and cooking tips to avoid waste, expiry dates and more.

All course materials and handouts will be provided.

This free course, run by StopFoodWaste.ie, will see a one-hour evening course run across the four Thursdays in July at 7 p.m. at the library.

Places are very limited so booking is essential.

Trans support group

Gorey Youth Needs is providing monthly support meetings for adults in a non-judgemental environment for those who identify as trans or non-binary and for those who are questioning, to express themselves freely and find support.

Market House Festival

Gorey will be getting loud over the August bank holiday weekend on August 2, 3 and 4, as there will be a mix of music and events suitable for the whole family.

The headline act is John Gibbons, who will play on Friday, August 2, and will be supported by Aimée as well as The Fallen Lights, Beat on the Street and some special guests.

On Saturday, Something Happens and The Gentlemen Callers will take to the stage. The Making Music busking competition will also take place. The Tan and Sober Gentlemen band will travel from North Carolina to Gorey to entertain crowds over the weekend.

Entertainment on Sunday will include free live music on the Main Street from the Queen tribute act Qween, plus Tied to the 90s, The Goblin's Lair, Tan and the Sober Gentlemen, Tak'en It and more.

This year sees the return of the popular Super Hero Fun Run on Sunday, which encourages participants to dress as their favourite superhero, starting from Gorey's Main Street.

Adult volunteers from local clubs and societies are needed during the weekend, and in exchange for voluntary work, the organisers of the festival will make a donation to the club or society.

Gap Arts Festival

All are gearing up for the Gap Arts Festival which takes place on August 6, 7 and 8 in Ballythomas NS., with a fun bilingual summer camp for four to 13 year olds.

All are welcome to come along for arts and crafts, drama, dance, song, cooking, music and games while learning some Irish phrases.

The ever-popular mentoring of young musicians and singers with Marc Aubele will also take place during the festival.

RNLI shop

Shop for gifts that help save lives at sea as the RNLI lifeboat shop on the North Pier in Courtown has lots of new arrivals of souvenirs, clothing and gifts to suit any occasion.

The shop will be open from Thursday to Sunday from 2 p.m. until 5 p.m. throughout the month of June.

Summer bridge

Gorey Boxing Club will play host to Gorey summer bridge, costing €5 per person running every Wednesday at 7.30 p.m. sharp during June, July and August.

There will be no joker system but if you need a partner you can call 087 645 3868 and the team will try find you one.

Bridge club holiday

This year's bridge club holiday is to Spain, and the club members will jet off from September 17 to September 24.

This year's' package costs €795 per person sharing, and includes return flights from Dublin to Malaga with 10kg checked bag, airport transfers, a day trip to Granada with an English speaking guide, seven nights in the four star Plas Granada Club Resort on a half board basis including wine with dinner and, of course, five nights of bridge.

Courtown Colour Run

Registration is now open for this year's Courtown Colour Run which takes place on Saturday, July 13 at 12 noon.

There will be 3km and 6km distances.

With no winners or official times the Colour Run caters to everyone, from first-time runners to athletes, children and buggies, even dogs.

All the money raised at this event goes to Gorey Hockey Club who are fundraising to build their own Astro turf pitch in Gorey.

Babies and toddlers

Baby rhyme time is a fun session of singing, rhymes and short stories to develop a love of language and a foundation of learning.  This is an interactive session for parent and baby, suitable for children under two years of age.

This takes place every Thursday from 11 a.m. to 11.30 a.m. at Gorey Library.

Toddler storytime is on Tuesday mornings at Gorey Library from 11 a.m. for toddler stories, arts and crafts. 

Plenty of fun is guaranteed and everyone is welcome.

SVP Shop donations

The St Vincent de Paul furniture shop in Gorey welcome donations of good, clean sale worthy furniture, bric-á-brac, rugs, etc.

The team will come and collect the furniture or any items.

The shop is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. from Monday to Saturday.

Ballamon bull fest

Harry and Amanda Murphy's farm yard will play host to the annual barndance and barbecue on July 6, organised by Kilrush Askamore GAA club.

The GAA Club's charity partners this year will be the two national schools in the parish as well as the two churches. Tickets costing €10 are available from committee members and adult players.

Hospital open day

The friends of Gorey Hospital are holding an open day in the secure garden at the back of the hospital. This will be on Sunday, July 7 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and all are welcome, so come along and enjoy the music and the garden.

Summer reading

Join a reading adventure at Gorey Library in a reading-based programme free to all children. Search www.summerstarts.ie for recommended books based on age groups.

Children sign up at the library, keep records of the books they read and receive a certificate of achievement at the end.

GROW meetings

GROW, Ireland's largest community-based mental health organisation, will hold meetings weekly on Mondays at 10 a.m. at the Loch Garman Arms Hotel and Thursdays, 10 a.m. at Tesco Extra Store, Ramstown, Gorey.

All are welcome to come along for free, to discover personal growth, prevention and full recovery from all kinds of mental illness.

The 'Gorey Landscapes' art exhibition will be held at Gorey Art Collective's space at Trillium House, St Michael's Place, Gorey from Friday, July 5, to Sunday, July 7.
