Gorey Active Retirement - On Wednesday, October 16, the South East Region Ten Pin Bowling Fun Day will take place at Leisure Max Wexford at 10.30 a.m. If interested, talk to Frances or Ann.

On Thursday, October 24 there will be a trip to Shelbourne Park for dog racing. Entrance fee plus bus and a three-course meal for €50 per person. Book early as this is popular.

A new season has started so why not try out some of the weekly events on offer or even start a new one. Members of the Committee will help.

Bowls on Monday, Darts and Go for life on Tuesday, Walk on Wednesday, Art on Thursday, Irish Class on Friday.

Cruise: Following a successful cruise this year the Committee are considering organising another cruise in 2020.

They would like to assess the interest members would have in going on a cruise and are asking interested members to contact any member to express their interest so that they can decide if it is feasible.

An early response will be appreciated as it is essential to book a cruise early.

Historical Society

North Wexford Historical Society has now commenced its winter schedule of talks.

Hairspray auditions

Gorey Musical Society will host auditions for 'Hairspray', directed by Stephen Acton and Conor McCarthy, with choreographer Clodagh Leacy, from 3 p.m. on Sunday, October 13, at the Masonic Hall, The Avenue, Gorey.

The musical will run next year from March 30 to April 4 and if you are interested in taking part, more information is available by searching for Gorey Musical Society on Facebook or Instagram.

There you will find listings of character details as well as songs and dances you may need to prepare to audition.

Pantomime for 2020

Gorey Little Theatre's 2020 pantomime will be 'Beauty and the Beast', directed by Alan Corcoran, with musical director Fintan Cleary, assistant musical director Mandy O'Callaghan and choreographer Frances Ryan. Auditions have now taken place.

Gorey Musical Society

A night of musical hits will take place on Saturday, October 5, at the Ashdown Park Hotel.

The concert will be performed by past and present members of Gorey Musical Society along with some other guests featuring a host of hits from your favourite musicals new and old.

All are welcome to come along to Kilanerin Hall on Friday, October 11, from 9 p.m. for social dancing in aid of Gorey Musical Society's 'Hairspray'.

Baby rhyme time

Gorey Library hosts this weekly event every Thursday at 11 a.m. and all babies and carers are welcome to join in for a fun session of singing, rhymes and short stories to develop a love of language and a foundation of learning from the easy stages.

Digital skills

The free course in digital skills takes place and continues in Gorey Library on Monday, October 7, and is run by the Community Training and Education Centre (CTEC).

During the course you will learn about the internet, online safety and security, email, social media, online banking, online government services, shopping online and more.

Book launch

Gorey Writers Group invite you to the launch of member Tiffy Allen's book 'A Hundred Thousand Welcomes - the Story of City of Sanctuary,' which takes place in Gorey Library on Thursday, October 3, at 7 p.m.

Tiffy is very involved with advocacy work for the Syrian and other refugee groups, and the theme of the book touches on these issues.

Autumn yoga retreat

Following the success of the first yoga retreat, Wells House and Gardens will host an autumn weekend retreat into wellness for your body and soul from Friday, October 18, to Sunday, October 20.

Yoga instructor Liz Reilly will be on hand throughout the weekend to guide you to a better place in mind, body and spirit.

Meals and accommodation are provided as well as all classes and workshops, and the cost is €380 per person sharing.

Fiction clinic

All budding writers are invited to take part in a weekend event at The Amber Springs Hotel on October 5 and 6 with Claire Keegan directing a weekend on writing dialogue.

Entitled 'What's the Point in Talking,' Keegan will argue that our speech is full of casual and consequential misunderstanding, and some of what characters say is what we do not wish to say, reveal or realise.

The course will examine dialogue, and take a look at accents, dialogue layout, pacing, humour and balancing descriptive paragraphs with dialogue.

This course will likely be of interest to those who read, write or edit novels, short stories, plays, memoirs, screen plays, creative non-fiction or are simply interested in how and why people talk.

Tuition is €350 and there is a €100 non-refundable deposit to secure a place.

Gorey art club

Come along and get creative at Art and Hobby, Gorey as every Saturday the team will host weekly art workshops at the Studio, first floor, Art & Hobby, Gorey.

Drop in is €10 per class and each week the programme will have a different theme, ranging from drawing, painting, soft pastels, oil pastel, print, clay, collage to mixed media, plus lots more fun process art activities.

Groups meet for one hour at 11 a.m. or 12.15 p.m. weekly.

Animal handling

Wells House and Gardens will host animal handling workshops for children every Saturday for the month of October, and the cost is €3 per child.

Events will take place during the afternoon from 3 p.m. at the animal farm located on site at Wells House, Ballyedmond.

Fun run

Bunscoil Loreto are holding a 5km Family Fun run/walk on Sunday, October 6 with registration from 11 a.m. in the school gym.

The run will kick off at 2 p.m. and entry is €10 per person. There will be prizes for first, second and third place in the men's and women's category.

There will be a raffle on the day with lots of prizes. Fancy dress is optional, and all ages are welcome to take part.

Dance classes

A venue has been found for the Dancing with Declan jive and dance classes will start on Monday, October 7 from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m. at An Siolan Behind the Church in Ballygarrett Village.

Classes will cost €10 and all are welcome to attend.

Coffee morning

Venie and Clare's Coffee Morning in aid of Arklow Cancer Support Group and Gorey Hospital will take place on Thursday, October 3 from 9 a.m. to 2pm in St Bridget's Hall, Carnew. All are very welcome.

Methodist Church

Bible study at Gorey Methodist Church focusing on characters from the Old Testament continues at the church hall on Wednesday, October 2. Everyone is most welcome to join in as the group journey with the young Jewish girl Esther in saying 'Yes to God' despite the risk to her life at the time.

Volunteers needed

North Wexford SPCA are on the lookout for more animal lovers to come on board as volunteers who may have a few hours to spare per week to help out animals in need.

The animals are both dogs and cats, and those who enjoy walking are also asked to take them out for some exercise.

Cooking demo

A cookery demonstration with Michelin star chef Derry Clarke will be held in Seafield Hotel on Thursday, October 10, at 8 p.m.

Tickets at €20 are available from Quinn Property, Gorey, by dropping in or calling 053 9480000. They will also be for sale at a pop-up shop in Quinn Property on Saturday, October 5, between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.

Tickets for the Gorey Oscarz Gala night in the Amber Springs Hotel on Saturday, November 16, will also be available on the day. All money raised will go towards St Aidan's Services to replace their buses.
