Skerries defeated by an Inch

Inchicore Athletic 1 Skerries Town 0

Skerries did everything but score as they left Inchicore empty handed following a breathtaking hour and a half of football. Inchicore scored the winning goal in the 90th minute but how it remained scoreless up to that point remains a mystery.

Indeed, it's no exaggeration to suggest that Skerries could have been out of sight after fifteen minutes as Alan Sweeney's men spurned three golden opportunities in the early stages of this game.

The first big chance of the game fell to striker Bob McKenna who made a great run to break the offside trap leaving him one on one with the Inchicore keeper. Unfortunately for Skerries supporters, McKenna's shot went over the bar to ensure the game remained scoreless.

Eight minutes later Skerries created another excellent chance following an excellent move involving Donal Coughlan, Eoin Dempsey and Shane Langan. Coughlan played it into Dempsey who fed Langan out on the left. The speedy winger returned the ball to Dempsey who was clean through on goal but his shot laced accuracy as he hit it straight at the Inchicore goalkeeper.

Two minutes later Emmet Mullen set Reece Weldon clear but the Inchicore keeper came off his line quickly and did just enough to put Weldon off as the ball rolled harmlessly wide. After those three near missed it was time for Inchicore to attack and they finished the opening half well as they forced Skerries goalkeeper Dylan Sweeney into three excellent saves.

The second half continued to be played with both sides attacking at will in what was a great advert for the league. Darren Lynch almost put Skerries ahead after 50 minutes but his header went just over the crossbar. Bob McKenna missed another one on one before Skerries keeper Dylan Sweeney kept his side in the game with three magnificent saves to keep the game scoreless. Just when it looked like the game would finish scoreless Inchicore broke Skerries hearts at the death with an excellent free kick which left Sweeney with no chance. There was still time for one last Skerries chance late on but substitute Barry Davey's header went just wide of the target meaning Inchicore hung on for all three points.
