Rush and Rangers are off the mark

Major 1 Sunday round-up

Rivervalley Rangers opened their LSL account with a hard-earned point against Finglas on Friday evening.

Finglas started much the quicker and stronger as Rivervalley chased shadows at times. The Swords side dug in, though, and got to the break at 0-0 like all good sides do when not firing on all cylinders.

The home side looked much more like themselves in an attacking sense during the second half, and but for a world-class save from the visiting keeper they would have been ahead. Jimmy Rock's effort from 10 yards was saved before the crossbar denied Ruairi Deasy.

The Rivervalley Rangers keeper also earned his corn, pulling off an excellent save to keep Finglas out on the hour mark. A late goal would have been harsh for the losing side and in the end this was as entertaining as any 0-0 can be. All in all, a decent start against tough opposition for Patsy O'Neill's side.

Rush Athletic began their Major 1 Sunday campaign with a Friday night kick-off away to Garda. Following three promotions in a row this was always going to be a tougher test for Declan Whyte's side. However, they will have been encouraged with a 1-1 start in a game they dominated for large periods.

Jonathan Hanratty put Rush ahead, but Garda equalised from the penalty spot just five minutes later.

Rush almost won it late on but were denied by the post as Bryce Nbjatang's strike came back off the woodwork.
