New management duo take over Senior set-up at Portmarnock

Portmarnock have a new management team in place for the new season following what the club describe as 'an extensive and thorough process to identify a new management team' for their Senior Sunday side.

Portmarnock replaced long serving manager Willie O'Leary with Robbie Flanagan earlier this year but were forced to look elsewhere when the former Arsenal youth player was offered a new role at newly promoted Norwich City. Portmarnock chairman Martin Keating announced details of the club's new management team recently with the duo of Brian Irwin and Gareth McMullen getting the nod. "Portmarnock AFC have appointed a new management team as interim manager Robbie Flanagan becomes a senior scout for Norwich City after they won promotion to the Premier League in England," said chairman Keating.

"After an extensive and thorough process to identify a management team for our Snr Division LSL 1st team for PAFC, we are delighted to announce the appointment of Brian Irwin and Gareth McMullan as the new manager/coaching team for the season 2019/20.

"Brian Irwin is one of our own, a PAFC club man who played at the highest level in the League of Ireland. He won several trophies, including the Leinster Senior Cup and FAI league cup, culminating in 1995 with a league winners medal under Dermot Keeley. He was also an FAI Cup runner up in 1993.

"Gareth McMullan hails from Larne Co Antrim, he has previously worked as 1st team coach, Greystones United 2018/2019; 1st team coach, Dublin Bus FC 2017/2018; Coach, Shamrock Rovers u17 2016; Coach, DDSL Kennedy Cup Group 2016; Coach, NDSL Kennedy Cup u14 boys 2013/2014.

"He studied at Dublin Business School, where he received a BA Hons in Media & Cultural Studies FAI, UEFA B Licence. As well as at the University of Stirling where he received a PG Dip (level 9) Performance Coaching.

"Brian and Gareth will be assisted by Robbie Flanagan and Niall Carroll to complete the support team for next season. Please join me in wishing Brian and Gareth well in their new role in the club and offering the support of all managers within the club for next year," concluded the statement from Portmarnock.

The new management duo will get a chance to see their new players on the 2nd of July when pre-season begins for the club.
