No stopping Niamh!
Swords Boxing Club will have two boxers competing for honours in the Dublin Girls League this week after Niamh Fay joined her teammate Molly Bennett in the finals.
The reigning Irish champion was pitted against Corinthians' Tatianna Viaventst in her semi-final contest last week and the girl from the Mountjoy-based club soon found herself on the back foot.
Early in the first round Fay landed a jab and big backhand that prompted the referee to give Viaventst a standing count, and after another flurry of punches the official had no option but to stop the contest and seal Fay's passage to the decider alongside her compatriot Bennett.
However, Niamh's younger brother John Fay was less fortunate when he took on a local 16-year-old at a show in Paris last week.
From the start of the contest the Frenchman kept moving and using the full extremities of the ring, but Fay managed to cut him off and land some good jabs and hooks.
In the middle round Fay again held the centre of the ring and did the bulk of the work, although the local boy did managed to unleash some good hook shots.
It was more of the same in the final round as the French boy seemed reluctant to engage, while Fay kept going forward and landing some good backhands.
Overall, it was a good workout for Fay, even though the outcome didn't go according to plan as the judges scored the fight 2-1 in the local boy's favour.
