McCaffrey sets sights on Nationals

St Margarets athlete Rafael McCaffrey has qualified to compete in next week's All-Ireland Schools Combined Events Championship after capturing the Leinster title against the odds earlier this month.

The 17-year-old came into the competition on the back of a head cold and then picked up an injury in practice which nearly forced him to withdraw, but the Ratoath College student battled through to win gold in a Ratoath AC club record and personal best aggregate of 2,703 points.

His achievements in the individual disciplines that make up the combined events included PBs in both the 60m hurdles and 800m.

McCaffrey now moves on to the National Combined Events in AIT Athlone, on the back of a brilliant summer when he won a number of medals at the indoor and outdoor National Relay Championships - including gold in the All-Ireland Under-23 400m and silver in the All-Ireland Senior 400m.

He was also the runner-up in the long jump at this year's All-Ireland Under-20 Indoor Championships.
