Key weekend in provincial title fight

Leinster League

Ashbourne attempt to take another step towards the Leinster League Division 1A title this coming Saturday when they host fellow challengers Dundalk at Milltown House.

The game takes place under lights at 6pm and the south Meath side, who have an All-Ireland Junior Cup decider to look forward to at the end of January, will be wary of a Dundalk side still smarting from their capitulation in the reverse fixture.

The Louth men, coached by Skerries native Mike Walls, had a 20-point lead in the closing stages at Mill Road, only to finish on the losing side as Ashbourne hit them with three converted tries in quick succession.

The league leaders coped admirably with a run of fixtures on 14 straight weekends before Christmas, and it will be interesting to see if the one-month break has been a blessing or otherwise.

Balbriggan, meanwhile, are entering last-chance saloon in terms of their promotion aspirations in Division 2B, but their next two assignments are away to the bottom two teams. They visit North Meath on Sunday afternoon, followed the following weekend by a trip to Arklow.

In Division 3, mid-table Swords host lowly Clane at ALSAA next Sunday afternoon.
