Balbriggan quartet answer Ireland's call

Rugby League

Four teenagers from Balbriggan have been selected to play for Ireland in the Rugby League U19 European Championship taking place in Belgrade, Serbia this August.

Josh McNamee, Ronan Michael, James Mulvany and Kevin Varga all received call-ups to the squad which is a combination of players from the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland.

The young men have been training with the Wolfhounds squad in Belfast, Gormanston, Carlow and in DP Gymnastics, Balbriggan as well as taking part in tournaments across the country.

Coaches Paul Varga and Paul Cullen are delighted for the Republic lads having trained them over the past year.

The championship will feature eight nations including hosts Serbia, England, France, Scotland, Wales, Russia, Ireland and Italy.

This is the first time in over twelve years that the tournament has taken place and is an unmissable opportunity for young developing players to represent their country against the best in Europe. Ireland's first game will be against Scotland on Sunday 5th August.

Rugby League is gaining momentum in Ireland both at grassroots and international level.
