Syl's sent packing by Plunketts
Oliver Plunketts 1-19 St Sylvester's 0-19
While there was just a solitary score in it at the end, this was a game Sylvester's were chasing for most of the second half as their hopes of makes the knock out stages received a fatal setback at the Broomfields on Wednesday night.
They were forced to play the final quarter without corner forward, Sean Graham, after he was red carded for a late pull on his opponent, although many were of the opinion it was a harsh censure on a player who had an unblemished record up until then.
In either case it made Sylvesters task all the more harder as Plunketts who move to the top of group two as a result of Wednesday nights win never looked back once finding the back of the net on 44 minutes through Dylan Bourke.
It was a soft goal to concede at that stage although Bourke proved a formidable character on the night for the visiting night. The switch of Patrick Curtain on to Kevin O'Flynn also proved a shrewd move after what had been a bright opening for the former Fingal captain.
O'Flynn was a strong presence in for the home on the forty and proved very competitive in the aerial stakes as a Sylvester's side needing a win to stay in contention showed their intent early on.
And with full forward, Sean Kenny, strong down the middle, Sylvester's will probably feel that they were a touch unlucky to go in a point in arrears at half time.
Tellingly they were never able to shake off their opponents with Liam Corbett sending over a number of important frees including one at the break.
And while both Gareth McGrath and Andrew Richardson gave Sylvester's a strong foothold in midfield, the writing was on the wall once Bourke had got in behind the defence before converting from close range for the visitors to open up a four point lead for the Plunketts. The game had begun well for Sylvester's with the home side spreading the ball well to good effect to open a two point lead.
Murphy was a constant threat of placed ball but also landed a fine score from far out on the left before landed a free to put three between the sides.
And while Plunketts would hit two successive wides after that, they were no now on top in the possession stakes with the home side held to just one point in the final ten minutes at the half as Plunketts hit four points on the bounce which included two frees from Corbett to take a 0-9 to 0-8 lead at the break.
And while while Syls close down the space well after the restart to draw level at the three quarter mark, Bourke's goal soon after would effectively turn the tide in Plunketts favour.
