Paws cafe closure shocks dog lovers

John Manning

The Board of Ardgillan Castle has said the closure of PAWS dog-friendly cafe at Ardgillan was taken to 'improve operational performance' at Ardgillan.

An outcry has developed over the weekend as news of the popular and successful cafe's closure spread on social media. Loyal customers of PAWS have started an online petition to keep the facility open, which has gathered over 1,200 signatures at the time of writing.

Explaining the move, the Board of Ardgillan Castle Ltd, issued a brief statement to the Fingal Independent, saying: 'As part of efforts to improve operational performance at Ardgillan, a decision has been taken to close Paws Café at this time.

'The decision was not taken lightly and we apologise to our loyal customers for the inconvenience this will cause. In the meantime, refreshments are available in the Castle Tea Rooms (all week) and at the Playground Kiosk (weekends).'

Fingal County Council are currently setting about a process of tendering out for catering contracts in a number of its heritage properties, including at Ardgillan and it is understood that the intention is to re-open PAWS once those contracts are awarded.

But in the meantime, a lot of upset dog owners and regular customers of PAWS have been voicing their support for the facility's return. One person who signed the online petition said: 'Dogs are an important part of family life & they need evry opportunity for socialisation with other dogs and people. This is a way to entice more people to frequent both the cafe and the castle grounds. Seems a shame for it to go to waste.'
