CLARIFICATION of soccer-star, John Devine’s role in the proposed ‘Fingal FC’ project came this week from Liam Buckley who says that the former international player will be a valuable consultant on the project.

Mr Devine, who played for Arsenal and Manchester United as well as donning the green shirt for the Republic of Ireland, was Ireland’s director for Manchester United’s football academy for 10 years.

Recently retired from that post, Mr Devine can now pass on the wisdom he gathered over those years in youth training to the fledgling Fingal soccer club.

Through him, Liam Buckley who is one of the main forces behind the project, hopes that coaching expertise can be passed down to the ‘coaches and players in County Fingal’.

He’s anxious that the Fingal FC project be a ‘community-based club’ and that all the junior clubs in the county will be properly consulted along the way.

To that end, another meeting is planned with the junior clubs in January but Liam is excited about unlocking the training secrets of a major premiership club for use by coaches and players in Fingal.

That’s where John Devine comes in and it is hoped that as a consultant on the project, Mr Devine will help structure not only Fingal FC’s training modules but also the training programmes available to coaches and players across the county.

The club is deliberately being structured to avoid ‘poaching’ young talent from other Fingal Clubs and won’t have a schoolboy section but will instead keep a relationship with talented youth in the county through its training programmes.

When those talented players reach under-18 or senior level, Fingal FC, as it is being dubbed will be able to step in and offer those players a chance to play at the next level.
