Councillor makes call for extra gardaí to be on duty on St Patrick's Day
Local Swords Councillor, Joe Newman is calling for extra gardai to deployed in Swords over the St. Patrick's weekend.
Cllr Newman said: 'The huge success of the St. Patrick's Day parade in the county town over the past years has attracted growing numbers of foreign tourists and local Swords families.
'With the town's close proximity to Dublin airport, Swords businesses report increased numbers of tourists who will spend either their first couple of days or last couple of days of their holiday exploring the Fingal region, with the majority staying at hotels in Swords or at the Airport.
'In recent years the local Hospitality trade and retailers have invested in their premises and recruited extra local staff to meet the welcome demand, therefore it is very important that there is a visible effective Garda presence over the festive weekend.
'A well policed town will give assurances to our residents and tourists alike with regard to their safety.'
Cllr Newman added: 'Many local residents and business people are proud that Swords is a purple flag town which indicates that Swords is a safe place to visit.
The independent councillor says he is 'committed to ensuring that the local Gardai are given the necessary resources so that they can do their much valued work in an efficient and effective manner'.
