Several local community groups and sports organisations are to benefit from almost €500,000 in funding under the Government's Community Enhancement Programme.

Over €477,189 was provided to communities in rural and urban areas in Fingal through the Community Enhancement Programme (CEP), local Senator James Reilly (FG) has revealed.

Beneficiaries of the programme include: Skerries Men's Shed €16,800, Skerries Gymnastic Club €5,000, Balbriggan Men's Shed €16,800, Balbriggan FC €60,000, Donabate Community Leisure Centre €5,000, as well as a number of other community groups in Fingal who will all put the money to good use on behalf of their communities.

Senator Reilly said: 'This Community Enhancement Programme provided funding to communities in order to enhance facilities in disadvantaged areas.

'It was great to see the wide variety of local projects supported.'

He added: 'This programme helps support important work by communities across Fingal by allocating funding worth €477,189 to 123 local projects.

'Fine Gael is committed to ensuring that rural Ireland is given the support it needs, so that it can achieve its full potential across a wide-range of areas.'

Minister for Rural and Community Development, Michael Ring said: 'Having allocated over €12.5 million under the Community Enhancement Programme in 2018, I am delighted to be able to announce the more than 3,000 projects which are set to benefit from it.

'A relatively small amount of money can go a long way, and this investment will greatly benefit local community projects throughout the country.'

Deputy Ring said that funding had been allocated 'in a way that takes deprivation levels into account, and that he was confident that communities 'who need it most, whether in cities, towns or rural areas' would benefit.

The application process for the CEP is administered by Local Community Development Committees (LCDCs) in each local authority area.

An open application process for the funding was held when the Community Enhancement Programme was originally launched in back in May of 2018, according to Senator Reilly.
