Red squirrel disappears

Council report - Malahide/Howth Area meeting

The council has reported that the red squirrel population of Howth is likely to go extinct.

It reported: 'The Red Squirrel project undertaken on Howth in 2017 and 2018, noted a significant decline in Red Squirrels from 25 individuals in 2011 to only two males found during this study despite intensive survey work over two years. Given that there are no populations of Red Squirrels in the vicinity of Howth, it is unlikely that Howth can be repopulated by new Squirrels. This means that the Red Squirrel on Howth will go extinct.
