Memorial scholarships go to Fingal students
Students from Swords, Skerries and Balbriggan have been awarded DCU memorial scholarships in honour of past students and graduates of the university or in memory of notable figures in Irish society.
The awards were presented by the President of DCU, Professor Brian MacCraith, and Mary Shine Thompson, a trustee of the DCU Educational Trust.
Laura Quinn from Swords, Ore Ibikunle from Balbriggan and Eoin Smith from Skerries all received the Paddy Wright Memorial Scholarship.
The Paddy Wright Memorial Scholarship fund was established in 2008 in honour of the Chairman Emeritus of the DCU Educational Trust, leading Irish businessman and honorary graduate of the university, Dr. Patrick J. Wright. After his untimely death in late 2007, Paddy's family and friends came together to create this fund to support students from North Dublin on the DCU Access Scholarship Programme - which Paddy helped to establish - and Dublin Gaelic Footballers in the DCU Sports Academy.
Emma Harper, from Balbriggan, received the Orla Benson Memorial Scholarship and said it will 'completely transform my postgraduate experience'.
She added: 'It is an honour to be the recipient of the 2016 Award, and a fantastic way to continue Orla Benson's contribution the science she loved.'
In 1995, Orla Benson went to Boston to work for the summer before her graduation from DCU. Orla died tragically while in Boston and her family and friends established the Orla Benson Memorial Scholarship in 1996 to assist a student with their studies and to honour Orla's memory. Orla, a native of Killarney County Kerry completed the Honours Degree programme in Biotechnology.
