Workplace health and safety initiative

A week-long campaign to raise awareness of health and safety in the workplace visited a number of locations across the region.

To mark World Day for Safety and Health at Work Blanchardstown Area Partnership organised a campaign to provide formal health & safety related training to almost 300 people across Fingal.

The training provided included Fire Marshal training and Defibrillator training to BAP staff. BAP clients and jobseekers across Fingal will participate Safe Pass, Manual Handling and HACCP training to improve their chances of landing a job.

Community organisations supported by BAP received a Health & Safety briefing to raise awareness of employer's responsibilities. During the week long event hundreds of people view an health and safety information video that is suitable for the culturally diverse population across Fingal.

The training and information videos took place in eight venues across Fingal including Coolmine, Tyrrelstown Community Centre, Huntstown Community Centre, Beat Centre, Balbriggan, Corduff Community Centre, Bracken Court Hotel, Balbriggan, Crown Plaza, Blanchardstown, and Applewood Community Centre in Swords.

Adeline O'Brien CEO of Blanchardstown Area Partnership explained how everyone has a responsibility for preventing accidents and injuries on the job.

'BAP believe that while government are responsible for providing the infrastructure in terms of laws and services, as employers we are responsible for ensuring that the working environment is safe and healthy.'

Adeline added that workers were responsible to work safely and protect themselves and not endanger others, workers should know their rights and to participate in the implementation of preventive measures.

World Day for Safety and Health at Work takes place on April 28, 2017.

The day was declared by the International Labour Organization (ILO) to promote the prevention of occupational accidents and diseases globally.

World Day for Safety and Health at Work is an awareness-raising campaign intended to focus international attention on emerging trends in the field of occupational safety and health and on the magnitude of work-related injuries, diseases and fatalities worldwide.

Occupational safety and health (OSH) is a cross-disciplinary area concerned with protecting the safety, health and welfare of people engaged in work or employment.

The goals of occupational safety and health programs include fostering a safe and healthy work environment. OSH may also protect co-workers, family members, employers, customers, and many others who may be affected by the workplace environment
