SWORDS first ever roller rink has opened its doors – making it one of the largest rinks in Dublin.

Fans of rollerskating are expected to flock to the rink, based inside a marquee between Swords Central and The Pavilions Shopping Centre, over the coming weeks.

Organised by Swords Promotional Leisure Activities, who run Swords Ice Rink during the winter months, the idea for a roller rink came about as a summer activity while the ice rink is closed.

'We had the ice rink in place from November to January last year and it went brilliantly,' said Annie Arshak, Director of Swords Promotional Leisure Activities.

'The site of the ice rink was sitting idle so we thought why not try a roller rink?'

Ms. Arshak said permission was applied for and they now have the site with the marquee in place for one year.

'We hope by bringing people to Swords for the roller rink it will help boost the economy of the area and we will be working with the retailers of the Pavilions as they have great facilities there for food and drinks.'

With professionally trained and qualified staff in place, including medics and a team of marshalls to help along the inexperienced, advice will also be provided on roller skating to give people the most enjoyable experience.

Based over 450 square metres on a white flooring, the rink will offer people the chance to try out roller discos with a great sound system and state of the art light show to enhance the experience.

Roller discos for over 16s will take place at 8 p.m. on Thursday, Friday and Saturdays while discos for under 16s will take place at an earlier time.

'There are family-focused sessions including sessions early in the day for younger children and tots as there is no separate kiddies rink due to space restrictions but we do provide skates for all ages,' added Ms. Arshak.

She said the new roller rink is accessible to wheelchair users with a ramp in place for wheelchair users to gain access to the rink.

Parking is available at The Pavilions Centre and other car parking situated within walking distance from the rink, making it easily accessible.

Swords Roller Rink is open from 11 a.m. to 8.10 p.m. Sunday to Wednesdays and from 11 a.m. to 9.50 p.m. Thursday to Saturdays until mid-September.
