OVER 30 children took part in Fingal Tri's first summer camp recently in Skerries.

With the local rugby club as a base, the kids spent three days swimming in the sea, cycling, running and playing lots of games.

They even managed to fit in an aquathon and a duathlon – a very busy three days!

Fingal Tri Juniors started in 2012 with a group of Fingal Tri parents looking for something to introduce their kids to their favourite sport.

It began with some fun games on the beach on summer Thursday evenings and has since grown into a club of over 40 kids from four years of age all the way up to 18.

There are weekly swimming lessons as well as running and cycling sessions for all ages and the kids love it.

With the huge amount of interest, they decided to go one further and run a summer camp this year. Lots of the regular members took part but word soon spread with the numbers of new kids coming to take part a real surprise.

The first of the three days started off with a quick introduction from coaches Louise Morgan, Elena Maslova and Jeremy Quinn before the kids headed out on their bikes for the cycle down to the beach.

Safety first meant a lesson on using brakes, securing helmets and cycling in a group before they all took off. Everyone joined the two-by-two cycle down to the beach where it was time for the sea swim. The cold was no bother to these kids – in they went all kitted out and had great fun playing games running into the water.

The Skerries lifeguards were a great help overseeing the group over the three days and with the calm water and sunny weather the conditions were perfect.

During the afternoon it was time for the running session – sprints, relays and lots of team games – and it's fair to say all the kids went home exhausted.

On day two, the kids had an aquathon. After the cycle down to the beach they were split into groups depending on their ages and talked through the course.

The camp organisers became human bouys and the kids swam/walked/ran around them up onto the beach and then down around a flag before heading to the finish line. Such a fantastic effort from everyone and their first aquathon for a lot of the kids.

During the afternoon it was bike skills and games for everyone, with lots of 'ship, sea, shore', 'duck, duck, goose' and 'bulldog'.

The third day was all about the duathlon. Along the grassy part of the South Strand Beach in Skerries a route was mapped out with the kids running before heading to their bikes, hopping on for the cycle course and leaving their bikes back for the final run.

There was huge excitement for the race and all the kids cheered each other on with an atmosphere to rival Solar Hill for all the cyclists!

Somehow everyone had some energy to head back to base for the prize giving and handing out of the goody bags.
