Fingal Libraries to offer super summer activities

The newest addition to Fingal County Council's jam-packed summer schedule is set to hit libraries across the county on July 21, combining science and education with fun and creativity.

Aptly titled STEMfest, this day-long event forms part of the STEAM through Fingal Project, which aims to demystify STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Maths) subjects, and create an informal public arena for activities open to, and inclusive of, the entire community.

Supported by Science Foundation Ireland and encompassing two pillars of the Creative Ireland strategy; enabling the creative potential of every child and enabling creativity in every community, STEMfest promises to provide a 'Slice of Summer Science', with a wide variety of exhibitions and events to suit all ages and interests.

STEMfest begins in earnest at 11am on Saturday, July 21 with a host of scientific and artistic events.

Anyone4Science will bring coding to Malahide Library from 2:30pm - 3:20pm. Open to 8-13 year-olds, participants will learn how to count, speak, and write their name in binary code - and attempt to crack secret codes!

Balbriggan Library will welcome Create School for a Podcast Workshop. Working in small groups, participants - aged 10 and over - will research, create, produce, edit, and share their stories via a podcast.

Last - but certainly not least - the amazing Fab Lab is coming back to Fingal Libraries with four creative sessions running in Donabate Library from 11am for ages 8 and over. Learn how to design, create, customise, and modify simple but extremely impressive products using laser and vinyl cutting machines.

A fun-filled and exciting day lies in store, but it also holds greater benefits for the community as a whole.

'The introduction of a STEM-based fun and informal education programme such as this one will lay the foundation for engagement with lifelong learning, and will ensure a well-educated and informed population base in Fingal,' explained Senior Executive Librarian, Lilian Whelan.

Numbers are limited for STEMfest events, so early booking is advised. You can book your place in any of the events by visiting of phoning the participating library.
