Dramatic society taking 'Steel Magnolias' to stage
Donabate Portrane Dramatic Society brings the iconic 'Steel Magnolias' to the stage in its latest production.
Better known as the 1989 movie starring Dolly Parton, Sally Field, Julia Roberts and Shirley MacClaine, the story was originally written for the stage by Robert Harling.
Based in Louisiana, the play details the strong bonds of friendship between a group of Southern women who support each other through everything life throws at them.
All the action takes place in 'Truvy's Hair Salon, where the owner's motto 'there's no such thing as natural beauty', sets the scene.
The play is a comedy-drama where the group comes to terms with tragedy within it's own circle, and follows the story of a group of Southern women who are, as the title suggests, 'as delicate as magnolias but as tough as steel'.
With an all-female cast, the play will have you laughing and crying in equal measures. The cast includes: Lisa Buckley (Truvy) - an experienced actress with the society; Aisling Keogh (Annelle), taking her first steps with Donabate Drama; Aine Dilleen (M'Lynn); Laura Brady (Shelby), first time treading the boards for the Society; Lorraine Halpin (Ouiser); and Sandra Leadbetter (Clairee) again, in her first outing for the Society.
Paul Keogh, a veteran of the drama Society directs this heart-warming tale which runs from November 1 to November 4 at 8pm each night.
The play will be staged at Donabate Community College. Tickets cost €10 and are available on the door or by phone at 086 0712530.
It promises to be another great production from the talented people at Donabate Portrane Dramatic Society.
