With the festive season behind us, we turn our thoughts to the 2013 golfing year. The process begins this week with the ladies' A.G.M. taking place on Wednesday, January 9, at 7.30 p.m. All lady members are encouraged to attend and discuss the issues relevant to the ladies' section of the club for the coming year. Election of the incoming committee will also take place. The club A.G.M. will be held on Friday, January 11, at 7.30 p.m.
We wish incoming lady Captain Joan and her team every success for the golfing year ahead.
Meanwhile, the golf continues with the 14 holes singles competition and the nine holes competition. Both competitions may be played on any day. The recent 'Spring-like' temperatures have afforded many opportunities to the ladies to enjoy a few holes while combating the Christmas excesses!
Results of nine holes competition No.16: 1, Mary Halligan, 18 points; 2, Ann Nolan 17 points; 3, Helene Daly, 16 points.
NEW ROSS SENIORS
Our first outing of 2013 was held in spring-like conditions on Thursday last with temperatures way above normal for the time of year. All the cobwebs hanging over from the Christmas period were brushed away as 13 teams got back into the swing of things, and high scoring was once again the feature of the day.
With new handicaps pertaining to the Seniors' group in operation for the first time, they seemed to work rather well too. Our handicapping system means there is never more than a point or two between the first three teams in the winners' enclosure.
Co-operation between all our players means that we are a very well-organised group enjoying to the full the friendly camaraderie and our game of golf each Thursday. Full marks to all who facilitated the green fee golfers who were on the course on Thursday last by not impinging on their rights of enjoyment - that's as it should be.
With placing everywhere on the course, the 90-point target was again surpassed by the first three teams home. Taking the honours with a fine score of 94 points were Pat Whelan (16), Patsy Farrell (17), Michael Brennan (19) and Larry Doyle (19).
Pipped at the post carding 93 points came John Kennedy (13), Willie Naddy (18), Martin Burke (23) and Tony Sexton (27), that team winning the Titleist balls. It was a dead heat for third place but a countback over the last six holes meant that Joe O'Farrell (14), Fr. Ger O'Brien (17), Peter Goggin (17) and Mick Martin (32) were officially given the nod for the third prize. Nearest the pin prizes went to Pat Whelan (ninth hole) and Willie Byrne (eleventh hole).
A warm welcome was given to Michael Martin and all were delighted to see him back with us again. Also, we welcomed an addition to our ever-expanding ranks when Jim Kehoe joined us for the first time.
We have our usual outing this week with the draw at the usual time of 10.40 a.m. sharp.
New year greetings and many thanks go to all the golf writers both local and national for the excellent coverage they gave to all our activities throughout 2012 - it was much appreciated by the New Ross Seniors' group.
The A.G.M. of Enniscorthy Golf Club will take place in the clubhouse on Friday next, January 11, at 7.45 p.m., following the A.G.M. of the men's committee at 7 p.m., and all members are invited to attend.
Golfing over the holiday period was somewhat curtailed by the wet conditions. However, some play was possible and the following are the results of competitions completed -

On New Year's Day there was a hugh turn-out of members in Rosslare Golf Club to welcome in our 2013 Captains, Len Fowler and Moira Fortune, and also our Junior Captains, Matthew Homan and Anna Gouldson.
Their families and friends were all present to witness the great drives down the first. The lady members would like to wish Moira all the best for the year ahead and hope she enjoys her time as lady Captain.
The competition format was a four-person scramble and we were blessed with a beautiful sunny day. The clubhouse was packed after the drive-in and we were looked after very well by our new caterers, Siobhán and David.

The weekend stableford singles was played in windy but dry conditions. Indeed, the good weather of last week was most welcome. The winner was David Morris (18) who played on Saturday and had an exceptional 44 points.
The second prize went to Mick Brauders (9), who played Sunday afternoon, with 41 points, and Gavin Duffy (27) was third with 40 points, holding off a group of players on 40 points too.
The A.G.M. on Saturday afternoon saw the current committee re-elected with some welcome new additions. Sammy Walker in his Captain's speech warmly thanked all the committee and members for their help and enthusiasm in what was a very enjoyable year for him, reserving special mention for the hard-working proprietor, Ron Breen, and his ground staff for their herculean efforts in maintaining the course to its excellent standard.
Sammy also welcomed incoming Captain Ger O'Brien. Courtown native Ger thanked everyone and is looking forward eagerly to his year as Captain. Ron's President's address was followed by Secretary Charlie Logan's report and Treasurer Leo Gleeson's financial report.
In these difficult times membership has stayed steady, and as ever Ballymoney Golf Club offers great value on a meticulously maintained par 71 parkland course with some very testing holes for golfers of all levels to enjoy. Several membership options are available at competitive rates.
Competitions got under way again last weekend and there was no evidence that any short lay-off over the festive season had any ill effect on the golfers at Courtown judging by some of the scores that were returned for the 14hole gents' fourball which was played over Saturday and Sunday last. We also had our first gents' Seniors of the new year which was played on Thursday and there was some great scoring here too.
On behalf of the committee we would like to take this opportunity to wish all our members and their families a very happy new year and look forward to some more great golfing for 2013.
