A proposal to place a floating pontoon on the river Slaney to facilitate easier access to the river for members of Slaney River Rescue received a lot of support at last week's monthly meeting of the local authority.

District Manager Ger Mackey told the members that consideration has been given to putting a pontoon on the river in the vicinity of the promenade to allowed the rescue organisation to moor an emergency rapid response craft there.

'This would allow them to respond quicker to emergency incidents where somebody gets into difficulty on the river, particularly in the vicinity of the town,' said Mr Mackey.

Cllr Jackser Owens welcomed the idea and he thanked Mr Mackey for meeting with members of Slaney River Rescue to discuss their concerns about launching facilities with him.

'I would like to thank Ger for thinking of putting in the pontoon,' said Cllr Owens.

'It's a fantastic idea,' he added.

Cllr Owens said that at present there are difficulties with the slipway the crew use because of tidal issues and that if they have to launch down river it increases the time before they can get to work after being tasked.
