Work on Central School's all weather pitch to start this summer

Esther Hayden

Gorey Central School is one of two schools in the county which will funding from Gorey company Image Masters.

Just six schools nationwide will receive the funding, two of which are in Wexford.

Scoil Mhuire in Rosslare and Gorey Central School were selected to receive the funding along with three schools in Dublin and one in Wicklow with projects ranging from outdoor forest classrooms, sensory gardens, talent shows, to soccer jerseys and all weather astro-turf playing pitches.

Last September photography studio Image Masters open a call for submissions, inviting Parent Associations of Image Masters Schools around the country to apply for financial support to help them complete their projects.

At Gorey Central School the funding will be used to fund the schools all weather playing pitch. The school has set the daunting task of raising over €70,000 to convert their grass area in the school yard into an all weather astro-turf playing pitch. The parents and teachers have been fundraising hard over the years to make up this sum and Image Masters were delighted to be able to help them in their final stretch, with work commencing this summer. The all weather pitch will be accessible to everyone all year round and will promote a healthy and active lifestyle within the school for their students.

Scoil Mhuire in Rosslare will use its funding for a sensory garden. The school will take on the ambitious task of converting their court-yard into an immersive sensory garden for their students. The garden will benefit the children in the following ways: Pupils will learn how to sow and care for fruit and vegetable plants thus improving self-sufficiency as adults; Pupils will learn to be respectful of the garden and their surroundings as they will be responsible for the content and maintenance of the garden; The children will harvest and eat what they grow thus promoting a healthy diet; They will be enabled to develop important life skills such as effective communication, decision-making, team-work and time-management while participating in the project.

A blog available at, will detail the projects progress.
