Traveller project to cater only for Enniscorthy area
Cllr Paddy Kavanagh has moved to assure people that the new Traveller Community Development Project for the County, which is to be based in Drumgoold, will only cater for travellers living in the Enniscorthy area at the Traveller Community Building there.
The Fine Gael councillor said that reports had circulated that the project, which was allocated €112,000 in funding from the Department of Justice and Equality, would see members of the travelling community from right across the county attend the Enniscorthy centre. This, he said, was not correct and satellite services would be available in New Ross, Clonroche, Bunclody and Taghmon to accommodate travellers in those areas.
'The scheme will be based in Drumgoold, but that doesn't mean that people will be coming from all the other areas,' said Cllr Kavanagh.
He also took the opportunity to reiterate his support for the scheme.
'I'm often put down as being anti-traveller,' he said. 'I think that's unfair. This is basically a scheme that looks at educating teenagers. I firmly believe that the only chance we have at a quiet life is if they are educated and to show them the proper way of doing things.'
