Three friends who train together for Ironman events in Wexford recently completed Ironman Barcelona, with one of the trio enjoying a particularly successful event.

Brendan 'The Bear' Wright, Mike Byrne and Thomas 'Tucker' Goff, all competed at the Spanish event, with Brendan coming second in his age category of 65 to 69, qualifying for the World Championships in Kona, Hawaii.

The icing on the cake came in the shape of an email from the Ironman organisation, letting him know that he is now ranked first in Ireland in his age category.

The trio completed a very tough swim of 3.8km, overcoming big sea swells. They then endured a 180km cycle and a full marathon of 42km.

The three men trained hard for nine months and overcame a variety of injuries leading up to the race day.

The Irish were well represented in Barcelona with 350 athletes taking part out of the 3,500 on the day.
