No resources in area for ‘adopt a road’ scheme

Pádraig Byrne at the Enniscorthy Municipal District meeting

The Enniscorthy Municipal District does not have the resources to implement a scheme which would see people adopt a stretch of road in their area with the goal of keeping it clean.

That was the verdict of Director of Services John Carley after the issue was raised by Cllr Barbara Anne Murphy at last week's council meeting.

Cllr Murphy said that the idea had been implemented in Gorey and seemed to be enjoying some success.

The proposed scheme would take the form of a competition with rewards for those who put a lot of work into maintaining their local area. However, Mr Carley said that it was not a runner in Enniscorthy at the moment.

'There are no resources to implement that scheme,' he said. 'The Department of the Environment don't really get involved.'

This disappointed Cllr Murphy who said that, at the moment, 'the roads are a disgrace' when it comes to dumping.
