MS dinner is a great success
The organisers of a dinner night out for people affected by MS have said it was a great success.
The event was held in the Courtyard Restaurant in Ferns and was organised by the Friends of People with Multiple Sclerosis in North Wexford and South Wicklow (FPWMSNWSW).
Speaking to this newspaper about the dinner, Clare Doyle, who is secretary of the group, said it was a very enjoyable night.
'We organise four social outings during the year,' she said.
'We invite people who have multiple sclerosis and their carers and helpers,' she added.
Other people invited to the social events are those who help out the organisation with fundraising initiatives during the year.
The group is a non-funded, registered charity, and as such it relies on fundraising to continue providing its services.
The dinner in the Courtyard was the first of this year's social outings with other events due to take place in Arklow, Enniscorthy and Gorey over the coming months.
'Because we cover south Wexford and north Wicklow we try to spread the social outings around,' said Ms Doyle.
'We work to try and support and enhance the lives of people in the area who live with multiple sclerosis,' she added.
The group tries to support people in whatever way it can including subsidising the cost of attending respite care in the MS care centre in Dublin.
Significantly, Ms Doyle pointed out that the HSE does not have a vehicle locally capable of providing transport to people who have mobility difficulties as a result of MS so the group also provides support in terms of the cost of getting people to appointments.
'If someone does need support for certain day-to-day living expenses we can help them,' she said.
'At Christmas we also try to give a bonus to people with MS,' she added. 'There are a lot of little things that we can help out with.'
The group was set up around 10 years ago and currently has 11 committee members.
They meet three of four times per year with the overall aim of helping people affected by MS in whatever way they can.
One of the next fundraising events on the calendar will be a golf classic scheduled to take place in Gorey.
