A mountain of animal supplies were piled up on the table at the home of 10 year-old Lucy Reville in Ballyhogue last week, after an overwhelming response to her appeal.

A real animal lover, Lucy took it upon herself to organise a collection, whereby people could drop off dog and cat food and various animal supplies to be donated to South East Animal Rescue. She put out boxes in local shops where people could donate with a note that read: 'My name is Lucy. I am 10 years old. I love all animals. That's why I am helping animals in need. We would really love if you could make a donation big or small. It would really help all the animals in need.'

Lucy, a fourth class pupil at Bree NS, was blown away by the response she received, as was her proud mammy Liz.

'We were going to ask for donations initially,' she said.

'But then we were in Aldi one day and Lucy said to me that maybe some people might not have the money to give, but could afford the 39c for a can of dog food. I wasn't expecting the response she got and I don't think she was either. People were so good and dropped things out to the house and everything.'

Lucy now looks forward to presenting the items to South East Animal Rescue so that they can continue their great work across the county.
