Local slimmers take a long walk for CF charity

Brendan Keane

Members of a slimmers group in Enniscorthy are going to walk 24 miles later this month to raise money for charity.

The walkers are all members of Tony McCann's Slimming World group and they plan to walk from Howth Head to Bray Head on Sunday, September 15, in support of CF Ireland.

The group members all attend the Saturday morning sessions run by Mr McCann in the Salt 'n' Pepper restaurant in the community workshop at 9 a.m. and 11 a.m.

Some of them reached their target weight in the space of a few months with the help of the organisation's food optimising plan with some people losing as much as four stone.

'Losing weight has allowed some of these members to begin to become more active and get out running and walking on a regular basis,' said a spokesperson for the group.

'The idea to do the walk came about because Tony himself took part in it last year with another group of local people,' said the spokesperson.

Never one to resist a challenge Mr McCann completed the walk in just over six hours.

When he mentioned he had done it to the members of his group and told them he planned to take part again this year the members took it upon themselves to face the challenge as well and decided they would also participate.

To train for the event the group members have been walking on a regular basis for the last two months.

'Since starting the group, members have said they are better able to focus on their weight loss and some of them have actually reached their target since starting to prepare for the walk,' said the spokesperson.

The walkers have also placed a collection box at their Saturday meetings so that all members who attend the slimming world session can contribute to the charity even if they themselves are not participating in the walk.
