A woman from Kiltealy has been awarded the honour of a Bene Merenti medal from His Holiness Pope Francis.

Biddy O'Leary, from Kiltealy, was presented with the medal in recognition of her many years of exceptional service to the church.

One parish council member commented to this newspaper: 'Her commitment to the church and the wider community of Kiltealy has been truly extraordinary.'

To mark the historic occasion the Kiltealy Parish Committee extended an open invitation to everyone in the area to join with Biddy and her family in Kiltealy church on Saturday, June 8, to celebrate her achievement with Bishop Denis Brennan, Fr Jim Fegan and Fr Michael Byrne.

Bishop Brennan delivered a heartfelt speech about Biddy's lifelong work in the community before he presented her with her medal during the mass.

After the mass, everyone was invited to the hall for refreshments.

The parish council spokesperson commented: 'There was a fantastic turnout and it was great occasion for Biddy, her family, and the entire parish community. She deserves it and everyone knows her.'
