An Enniscorthy woman has won one of the most prestigious awards in the country for her artistry with flowers.

Elizabeth Kenny, from Ballycarney, won a gold medal at this year's Bloom festival in Dublin for her floral art display.

She won the award in the intermediate section in which she faced around 23 other competitors from all over the country.

In all there were around 156 entrants in the floral art section.

Speaking to this newspaper about her win Ms Kenny said she was overwhelmed by the award.

'I just couldn't believe that I won gold,' she said.

'I definitely didn't think I had a chance of winning and would have been happy getting a commendation,' she added.

Ms Kenny is well known around Enniscorthy and ran a very successful children's boutique in the town on Wafer Street for 22 years.

The fact she only took up floral art two years ago makes her achievement all the more remarkable.

'I won a bronze medal in 2017 but I didn't think I would do as well as I did this year,' she said.

Ms Kenny's entry was titled 'Design with Nature' and she said that since retiring from her boutique she has developed a real passion for floral art.

'I did floristry but I have a love for floral art.'

However, her win might come as a surprise to people who know her well as she won numerous prizes in window competitions locally during her time in business in Enniscorthy.
