Seven months since the first Ger Devereux Memorial Walk, the benefits are still being felt as a number of initiatives have developed using the money raised. Among the initiatives was AED training offered by Paddy Redmond and his team from Enniscorthy Red Cross which saw over 20 participants take part.

There were plenty of smiling faces at The Riverside Park Hotel as the group, now fully trained in the use of a defibrillator, were presented with their certs by Sgt Colum Matthews of Enniscorthy Garda Station. On the night, Paddy provided a number of examples where AED and CPR training had saved lives and congratulated all of the volunteers.

The fund has also allowed for vital checks to be carried out free of charge on defibrillators across the county by Paddy and his team and anyone who has a defibrillator locally is encouraged to get in touch to ensure that everything is in good working order, before it's too late. As well as this, three defibrillators were provided for Enniscorthy at the Milehouse Village, the Still and the Mace Garage.

The business of this year's Ger Devereux walk was also addressed on the night and there were plenty of ideas. Officers elected were Michael Devereux as Chairman, Lou Brooks as Secretary and Karen Tull as Treasurer.

'Our action plan now is to further develop the very positive work we have implemented this year,' said Chairman Michael Devereux. 'We would like to provide more defibrillators and training. We would encourage sports clubs to purchase AED's and keep them checked regularly and hopefully clubs will avail of AED/sports injury training. It is also envisaged to set up a registry of AED's in the Enniscorthy Area that could be used on an iPhone app. I'm calling on the people of Enniscorthy to support this project and come join us later in the year on the Ger Devereux Memorial Walk 2018.'

If you would like to get involved or support this worthy cause, please contact Paddy at Enniscorthy Red Cross on 0876843637 or Michael Devereux on 0872927138. All support is greatly appreciated.

On the night, certs were presented to: Michael Devereux, Lilly Owens, Fran Moorehouse, Dee O'Leary, Lou Brooks, Liz Brooks, Martin Fenlon, Edmund Davin, Patrick Tull, Karen Tull, Patty Jordan, Eleanor O'Connor, Mary Murnane, Michael Booth, Helen McLachlan, Rebecca O'Connor, Donal O'Connor, Diarmuid Heffernan, Nick Roche, Paul Dempsey, Michael Purcell.
