Dean wins rubberman challenge
The recent Rubberman challenge in Bunclody was a fantastic success with 86 competitors taking part in the run/cycle and 52 playing golf.
After a tough competition the overall winner and newly crowned Rubberman 2019 is Dean Thompson.
While there is obviously a competitive aspect to the Rubberman challenge it also serves as a fundraising initiative and to-date it has raised €266,000 for Cystic Fibrosis.
This year the event had competitors from the USA, Northern Ireland and Scotland.
The challenge was founded by two friends Tony Redmond and James Bodels.
'It all started out as a bit of bar room banter,' Mr Bodels told this newspaper.
'It was the two of us claiming to be fitter than the other and eventually we decided to put it to the test,' he said.
However, instead of the usual triathlon format of cycling, running and swimming the two friends decided to substitute the latter with golf.
Cystic Fibrosis has a special significance for Mr Bodels and it was decided the event would raise money for those affected by the condition.
In addition to cystic fibrosis money from this year's event will also go towards the local branch of the Gavin Glynn Foundation.
This year's event had participants ranging in age from 13 to retirees.
The organisers thanked everyone who helped make it a success including Michael Fitzpatrick for the transition area and the participants themselves.
Special thanks was also extended to Bunclody Golf and Fishing Club for use of the facility for the golf aspect of the competition..
The overall list of winners was composed of: Men's cycle: 1st - Ciaran Redmond; 2nd - Barty O'Connor; Ladies Cycle: 1st - Alison Druhan; 2nd - Jo McLellen; Men's Run: 1st - Conor Mullins; 2nd - Michael O'Connor; Ladies Run: 1st - Orla O'Leary; 2nd - Bridget Tobin; Men's Golf: 1st - Dean Thompson; 2nd - Barty O'Connor; Ladies Golf: 1st - Alison Druhan; 2nd - Lisa O'Leary; Best overall lady - Alison Druhan; Rubberman juvenile champion - Scott Redmond; Irish Rubberman champion 2019 - Dean Thompson.
