There was a celebratory air in Sam McCauley Chemists in Enniscorthy on Saturday as staff, customers, and friends gathered for a family event to mark the official launch of the newly renovated store and its 60th anniversary in the town.

For seven local charities and community organisations, there was an additional reason to celebrate.

Sam presented a total of €20,000 to local charities and groups in recognition of their long-standing and ongoing significant contribution to the well-being of the local community.

The day-long celebrations also included free makeovers, hair demonstrations, prize giveaways and face painting.

The recipients included: St Vincent de Paul; County Wexford Community Workshop; St Patrick's Special School; Hope Cancer Support Centre; St Mary's CBS Bursary Fund; Enniscorthy Chamber of Commerce; and Rapparees/Starlights GAA Club.

Sam McCauley Chemists is Ireland's largest independently-owned pharmacy group and is steeped in a family tradition. Sam's late father Gerry and his mother Molly first opened a chemist shop in Enniscorthy 60 years ago.

In addition to the refurbishment of the Court Street store, the group is also planning to open several new stores nationally this year. The group has grown to 29 stores, employing more than 550 people. With an annual turnover of more than €90 million, it is listed amongst the top 500 companies in Ireland and is one of a small group of pharmacies which holds the title of 'Deloitte Best Managed Companies'.

'This is a very special milestone for us as we celebrate our 60th anniversary in business in Enniscorthy,' said Sam McCauley. 'We're delighted to be marking it with a further upgrade to the store.'

'The state-of-the-art store will help us to continue to provide our customers with the very best shopping environment available,' he continued.

'My wife Leslie and I are very grateful to our very loyal customers and to our dedicated staff, a number of whom have given up to 30 and 40 years' service to the company,' he added.

'Together we are proud to be carrying on the strong customer service ethos tradition of McCauley Chemists established by my parents all those years ago.'

'Without the commitment of our staff and the support of the community of Enniscorthy and Co Wexford, Sam McCauley Chemists would not have been able to establish itself as the national brand it has become today,' he concluded.
