Enterprising Teacher

Dean O'Connor, The Ballagh, a Learning Support and Business Teacher at Coláiste Abbáin, Adamstown is to be congratulated on developing a new Short Course for the Junior Cycle called 'Agriculture and Self-Sufficiency' which has received approval from the National Council for Curriculum Assessment. This means that it is an examinable subject for the Junior Certificate.

The aim of the course is to introduce students to agriculture, horticulture and self-sufficiency and to develop an understanding of the natural environment. Dean had started a very popular Agri Club in the school where the members grow vegetables in their own polytunnel and have done projects on hatching and rearing their own chicks where they get to see and understand the whole process of incubation and rearing of chicks. Students of the Agri Club are expected to collect the eggs and feed the hens before class and the caretaker does all that at weekends.

When the students harvest their vegetables they link up with the Home Economics class and learn to cook them. Last year they cooked Kale Colcannon for the senior-cycle students and teachers.

There are currently 24 students in First year doing the course. We salute you Dean, a super - enthusiastic, hardworking and inspirational teacher with his roots in Oulart-The Ballagh.
