TWO Drama Groups from the north of the county are heading to Roscommon this weekend for the All Ireland One Act Drama Finals.

Fortunately, they're not competing in the same section, so loyalties won't have to be divided.

Coolgreany Amateur Dramatic Society is competing in the confined section with 'The Donoghue Sisters' by Geraldine Aaron. This is Coolgreany's second time on the competition circuit, and they performed at five festivals around the country, and won all five.

'We're going in with the maximum points you can have,' said Norah Finn, PRO. The play stars Sally Stevens, Mary Ryan and Gillian Tallon, and before they travel to Roscommon, they will give a pre-All Ireland at St. Mogue's Hall, Inch, on Wednesday, December 4, at 9 p.m. Entry is €5.

The short play will be followed by tea, biscuits and a chat. The play involves three sisters who return home as their father is ill, and they go to their childhood attic and reminisce about a dark chapter in their young lives.

Competing in the open section are The Rasper Players. Stephen Acton and Tonya Swayne star in 'Home Free' by Lanford Wilson. This dark tale about a brother and sister in New York has divided audiences, but the performances have been roundly praised. The Director is Reidin Dunne, and John Redmond is Stage Manager.

In a Festival in Derry, they won Best Play, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Director, and Best Stage Manager; in Newtownabbey, Northern Ireland they got awards for Best Play and Best Director, while in Manorhamilton, Co. Leitrim, they won Best Play, Best Director, and Best Actor and Best Actress. They took second place in Ballymahon, Co. Longford and the award for Best Actor. The Raspers came third in the All Ireland last year.

The All Ireland One Act Festival takes place in Roscommon town from Friday, February 6 to Sunday, February 8.
