The children raised €700

The children of Gaelscoil Charman were delighted to help a charity close to their hearts last week.

The proceeds of the Christmas carol service in Bride Street church were handed over to Meningitis Ireland.

The sum of €700 will be used for research into the condition which can prove fatal.

The dangers of meningitis are certainly familiar to one of the families with children at the school.

Mags Smart lost her son Ruari when he was just a toddler.

So she was to the fore at the presentation along with Caroline O'Connor who arrived from Dublin to represent Meningitis Ireland.

Mags Smart noted that research is under way into the possibility of devising a vaccine which will inoculate babies against the disease while they are still in the womb.

The money was presented by principal Áine Gannon and the children in the school hall.
