700km Relay Run passes through town
A 700km relay run will pass through Gorey on March 9 next.
Rith 2014 will follow a route northwards from the south of Ireland to celebrate the Irish language. It will start in Baile Bhuirne, Cork, on March 7, and the special baton will be passed between groups over each kilometre of the course without stopping for nine days. It will finish in Belfast on March 15.
Rith 2014 has been organised to celebrate the Irish language and aims to raise money to create a fund for the promotion of the Irish language in the community.
'We hope to get as many groups and schools out on the day to take part in this enjoyable event,' said Bróna Kenneally of Conradh na Gaeilge Guaire which is supporting the run. The course through Gorey can be seen on www.rith.ie
Participants can register online. Rith 2014 is expected to reach Gorey at 2 p.m. on Sunday, March 9.
Some 30,000 people took part in the previous runs in 2010 and 2012.
The festival welcomes participation from the Irish language community, primary schools, secondary schools, third level colleges, sports clubs, youth clubs, and athletes, groups involved with the Irish language and language users and enthusiasts.
