Gorey shortlisted for National Enterprise Town award

The people of Gorey are being encouraged to show off the town in its best light next Tuesday as judges from the Bank of Ireland National Enterprise Town Awards pay a visit.

As the only Wexford town to be shortlisted for this year's award, Gorey will welcome the three judges on September 24. This is a national competition, with over 75 entries from 31 City/County Council areas all vying for the prestigious title of Ireland's Most Enterprising Town.

And already plans are in place to show them how Gorey has grown into a vibrant, multi-cultural environment with an active business community.

Upon their arrival the judges will be welcomed by Cllr Malcolm Byrne before enjoying a presentation in The Hatch Lab. They will then begin a guided tour of the town, commencing at the Orchard near the Fire Station.

Their guide for this tour will be Norma Quinsey, and she said the tour has been designed to ensure the judges gain a feel for the town.

'The Main Street of Gorey echoes the thriving atmosphere of the town, we will be bringing them to meet the latest additions to our town like The Wine Buff which opened during the summer and then to retail forerunners like Ruby Rouge and La Crème who have contributed to make Gorey the retail shopping destination town it has become.

'Truthfully the main concern has been timing in that there are so many businesses to visit but time is limited. The judges will also be calling into several of the businesses on our Main Street so if you happen upon the group please by all means stop and tell them why we all love Gorey so much as a place to work, live and enjoy,' she said.

After their tour the judges will return to Gorey Library where business owners from the area will display the range of industries operating in the town.

Among them will representatives from Green's Berry Farm, Springmount Garden Centre, Wild About, Blaithin Ennis, Robert O'Connor, Wells House and Gardens along with Brennan's Brewery, the latest addition to business in Gorey.

Reacting to the news, newly appointed Gorey Kilmuckridge Municipal District Manager, Michael Drea said, 'Being shortlisted for the National Enterprise Town Awards is in itself recognition that Gorey is a thriving town on the national stage and it presents an ideal opportunity to showcase what Gorey has to offer as a great place to live, work and visit.'

The visit from the judges has been coordinated by a committee formed to showcase enterprise in Gorey.

Consisting of members of Gorey Municipal District, The Hatch Lab, Love Gorey and the Gorey Chamber of Commerce, the committee expressed thanks to the businesses who have assisted with the presentation.
