UCD mourns loss of an extraordinary servant
FINBAR COSTELLO passed away at his home on Wednesday, October 31.
Finbar was a huge influence on Universities' rugby in Ireland, most particularly on his beloved UCD for more than 50 years.
For generations of student players and administrators, Finbar was the heartbeat and conscience of UCD Rugby Club.
While a student at UCD in the early sixties, he was an enthusiastic player and honorary secretary. He made lifelong friendships during his time as a student.
Following his retirement as a player he became a mentor to many teams from the freshmen to the first XV. He had a particular interest in and support for junior teams.
He filled every job there was to be filled in UCD Rugby Club and to each task he brought trademark high standards of delivery.
Most importantly, he was held in huge regard by hundreds of players who at one time or another played their rugby in UCD.
He was president in 1980-81, received the club's Alumni Award in 1994 and, with his great friend Adrian Burke, was a trustee for many years.
The university recognised his immense contribution to UCD Rugby Club by honouring him with a doctorate.
Finbar was also, for many years, a key influence in the Irish Universities Rugby Union. He kept the flame burning for Universities rugby in Ireland through the various changes and developments in the game.
Finbar was principled, competitive, considerate and brave. His presence will be missed in so many ways. Most of all his passing will be keenly felt by his wife, Jo, sons, Barry and Gavin, and his extended family, to whom we send our heartfelt condolences.
