Skerries celebrate their title win in some style
SKERRIES were presented with the Eddie Egan Trophy as Leinster League Division 1A champions at their home in Holmpatrick last Saturday, and celebrated in style on and off the pitch.
They ran in an impressive nine tries against Garda in a 62-10 rout that capped a memorable season for the north Co Dublin club, and now they have the opportunity to return to the Ulster Bank League (AIL) after a six-year absence.
There was a carnival atmosphere at the seaside venue as club president Nick Heeney accepted the pennant from Leinster Branch president Stuart Bayley at a well-attended pre-match lunch before the celebrations got under way in style when captain Joe Glennon received the trophy immediately after the game.
At the other end of Division 1A, Monkstown were relegated despite a 37-10 victory over Enniscorthy.
The Sydney Parade club lost out narrowly to Dundalk when the Co Louth side also scored four tries to beat Newbridge 30-10 at home in Mill Road, a result that means Dundalk now go into the promotion/relegation playoff with the second-placed team in Division 1B in two weeks' time.
There is a two-way battle for that runners-up spot in Division 1B between Wicklow and Co Carlow, which will be decided on Sunday.
Fight
Portlaoise have been relegated and the promotion/relegation playoff spot would appear to be a straight fight between Ashbourne and Tullow who meet on Sunday; Ashbourne will be at home and they hold a four-point lead over their visitors.
In Division 2A, Portarlington travel to Kilkenny secure in the knowledge that a single point will guarantee them the crown, while second-placed Roscrea will head to Malahide assured of the playoff spot but hoping for a last day miracle in order to claim the title.
