Let's hope new dynamic duo can give us plenty to cheer about
JIt's the dream team that has the whole sporting world agog: I'm referring of course to Martin O'Neill and Roy Keane taking over as the new head honchos of the Irish soccer team. The sports writers are already having a field day at the prospect of the ice-cool Ulsterman and fiery Corkman working side by side.
BETRAYAL
It has already all the ingredients of a thriller. But some pundits, like our own irrepressible Eamon Dunphy, are already predicting troubled waters ahead.
From my limited knowledge of soccer, it certainly does not have the prospect of a marriage made in heaven. Keane hasn't covered himself with glory in his managerial career so far. I find it hard to picture him playing second-fiddle to O'Neill. Personally, I have never forgiven Keane for his betrayal of the Irish team in Saipan. Even so, I wish for the sake of our national soccer team that the "dynamic duo" will herald in a new era of success – and finally give all our hard-pressed and disappointed fans something to cheer about.
