A woman who drove away from a local forecourt without paying for €20 worth of fuel has been given the benefit of the Probation Act at Balbriggan District Court.

Sarah Bruce pleaded guilty to making off without payment at McLoughlins Garage, Drogheda Street, Balbriggan on July 16th, 2020 but said the incident had been “a mistake”.

Sergeant Patricia McGarrity said on the date in question the accused, with an address at Rooskey, Bealnamulla, Athlone, entered the forecourt of the garage shortly before 7pm and filled the vehicle she was driving with €20 worth of diesel.

She entered the store but failed to pay for the diesel and drove away a short time later.

The defendant was identified on CCTV.

Bruce, who has two previous convictions, said she “just forgot” to pay for the fuel and went back and paid for it after.

Judge Dermot Dempsey said he would apply the Probation Act.
