Rookies hold nerve to land silverware

North East League rookies Hazel Lane United claimed the Division 4 title in their first year in existence when grabbing the point required in their penultimate game at Castlemartin last Wednesday.

Hazel Lane knew anything less than a draw would mean travelling to BJD on Sunday looking for a result and hosts Donacarney were no pushovers.

There was some very good football played in the first half and the visitors did well in the possession stakes, resulting in chances for Angelo Marsella, Jonny Reynolds and John Mc Ginn who all tried to test the steady Donacarney goalkeeper.

In the second period Donacarney enjoyed supremacy and they pinned Hazel Lane back, forcing keeper Al Grennan to do some excellent sweeping skills. Nevertheless, little got past the solid centre-back pairing of Conor Lynch and Paul Flanagan.

Taking some of the pressure off his defenders, Ged Tiernan did some excellent work and the whole team dug deep as Donacarney came close to spoiling the party late on.

The final whistle brought roars of joy from the 'orange' sideline and Hazel Lane would like to thank all involved - both on and off the pitch - and say they can't thank the supporters and sponsors enough.

HAZEL LANE UNITED: Al Grennan, Stephen Connor, Conor Lynch, Paul Flanagan, Dave Culligan, Ged Tiernan, Conor Heavey, Shane McCormack, Jonny Reynolds, Angelo Marsella, John McGinn. Subs: Brian O'Connor, Darren Gallagher, Dean Gallagher.
