Promotion hopes over for Town
Soccer, North East Football League: Drogheda Town 1 Larkview Boys 1
Drogheda Town will remain in the Major Sunday division next season following a 1-1 draw at home to Larkview Boys last week.
With four games remaining Town's slim hopes of promotion were mathematically ended following the draw.
Following a brilliant Steve McGuinness penalty save to keep the score 0-0, Jordan Kelly broke the deadlock midway through the first half to put Town ahead.
Early in the second period a loose Dean Haggins pass was intercepted and from there Larkview broke down the left and a squared pass was turned past McGuinness.
At half-time Thomas O'Connell had been introduced and he smashed the post with a shot as Town pushed for a winner. Kelly went close, while Sam Reilly too had an effort that almost hit the net, but try as they might a winner wasn't forthcoming.
Town finished the season with 27 points last year and with games still remaining they are just two points behind that total. Kelly is hoping his side can surpass that target, which would mean some good progress for what is still a very young squad.
Ardmore visit Marian Park on Tuesday night.
