DROGHEDA United have completed the signing of 33-year-old Shamrock Rovers goalkeeper Tony O’Dowd on a two-year contract.

O’Dowd becomes Paul Doolin’s sixth new signing, and the manager is hoping he will push Gary Rogers hard for the number one jersey.

Alan Fitzpatrick was understudy to Rogers for much of last season, but the former Kilkenny City man didn’t make a single appearance for the first team and was one of the players released in December.

Doolin said yesterday: ‘You want a keeper who is pushing for the first team, and whoever is playing well will play. Tony is a decent goalkeeper, and his arrival will be good for Gary Rogers. Players have to be able to take challenges.’

O’Dowd spent much of last year on the bench at Shamrock Rovers, covering for highly-rated Barry Ryan.

Doolin has spoken with Bohemians duo Paul Keegan and Mark Rutherford, but doesn’t expect to be involved in any more transfer dealings in the coming days.

A pre-season friendly away to one of Doolin’s former clubs – Irish League title contenders Portadown – has been confirmed for Friday February 13, with an evening kick-off.

Meanwhile, around 20 players took part in the first three pre-season training sessions, which were held last Saturday, on Monday and last night (Tuesday). Doolin pronounced himself delighted with the facilities at Drogheda United’s new Mosney training base.
