JOHN Carroll’s team made a winning start to their eircom Under-21 League campaign at United Park last Saturday, writes Marcus Cavaroli.

Without any players who had played a competitive game for the first team, the Boynesiders survived a shaky first 15 minutes and two goals in quick succession through Sean Williams and Andrew Hageman put them firmly in the driving seat.

Substitute Paul Matondo, making his Drogheda debut after signing from Dromin United, put the icing on the cake late in the game when his attempted cross ended up in the net.

The fixtures are coming thick and fast for Drogheda Under-21s, with two more matches lined up for the next seven days.

This Saturday they’re in league action against neighbours Dundalk at Oriel Park, while next midweek they face a daunting trip to face Shelbourne in the Enda McGuill Cup first round.

DROGHEDA U-21s – Gabriel Sabbatini, Paul Cobbe, Gareth Whelan, Andrew Hageman, Ciaran Hartnett, Richard Taaffe, Austin McCann, Sean Williams, Francis McCullough, Alan Watters, Sean Brennan. Subs: Paul Matondo, Alan Bohan, Darren McCann, Boris Sinik.
