Kyle double boosts Drogs
SSE Airtricity U-17: Drogheda United 3 Cavan Monaghan 1
Kyle Robinson helped himself to two goals as Drogheda United Under-17s proved too strong for a tough-tackling Cavan Monaghan side at United Park on Sunday afternoon.
Sean Martin came in for Jack McCarthy between the sticks, had a good game all the way through and made some crucial saves in each half to keep his team in the game.
The Drogs also attacked well throughout, with Robinson - who had featured for the Under-19s against Cavan Monaghan the day before - and Zack Furey both dangerous whenever they got on the ball.
Luke Neville gave the midfield a solid look, but until the Drogs scored their third goal with 12 minutes to go, there was always a danger that the visitors would score an equaliser.
The Drogs took the lead on 20 minutes when Furey cut into the box from the left and was fouled and Robinson dispatched the resultant penalty expertly to the corner of the net.
Eight minutes later keeper Martin made a brilliant save in a one-on-one with the visiting striker to preserve the Drogs' lead.
Furey was proving a handful for the visiting defence, but despite numerous chances to increase their lead the Drogs went in only 1-0 up at half-time.
The second period started as the first ended, with the Drogs on the attack, but a momentary lapse on the hour mark led to the equaliser for the visitors after an alarming gap opened up down the middle of the home side's defence.
The Drogs continued attacking and a great through-ball on 75 minutes to Robinson saw the striker round the visiting defence and place the ball expertly past the keeper into the far corner of the net.
The Drogs added their final goal three minutes later when the ever-alert Furey pounced on a ball beaten out by the Cavan Monaghan keeper to dispatch the rebound and seal a really good win for the home side.
